When a Rooted Home Feels out of Reach

The Gap Between What I Want and What Is

I have a clear picture in my mind of the kind of home I want.

A home that feels steady.

Unhurried.

Connected.

Rooted.

A place where we gather at the table. Where learning happens naturally. Where there is space to breathe.

And some days, we live that out in small, beautiful ways.

But other days, it feels like there is a wide gap between that vision and our reality.

The day moves too fast.

Everyone feels a little off.

I feel behind before I’ve even really begun.

The Xbox stays on longer than I’d like.

Dinner isn’t at the table but is eaten quickly and on the go.

And if I sit in that gap too long, it starts to feel discouraging.

The Quiet Pressure We Carry

I don’t think we talk enough about how much pressure we carry when it comes to our homes.

And most of the time, that pressure isn’t coming from other people.

It’s the quiet expectations we place on ourselves.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to set the bar high—and learning to give myself grace doesn’t come naturally.

We see what others are doing. We take in ideas, rhythms, and routines.

And even if we don’t mean to, we start measuring our home against theirs.

We tell ourselves we should be more consistent. More organized. More intentional.

We should be doing better.

And without realizing it, something that was meant to feel grounding starts to feel heavy instead.

What a Rooted Home Actually Looks Like

I’m slowly learning that a rooted home isn’t built on the days everything goes right.

It’s not built on perfect mornings or perfectly followed rhythms.

It’s built in the returning.

Returning to the table after a rushed start.

Returning to a book, even if it’s later in the day.

Returning to the work of caring for our home, even when we feel behind.

It’s built in small resets.

In choosing, again and again, what matters most.

Not perfectly. Not consistently in the way we might hope.

But faithfully, over time.

What I’m Learning Right Now

I’m still in this. I haven’t figured it out, and I am not perfect.

There are days I still feel like I’m trying to catch up to the kind of home I want to create.

But I’m beginning to see that maybe I’m not behind.

And that those perfectly staged photos I find myself comparing my home to… aren’t real life.

Maybe this—the messy mornings, the missed rhythms, the starting over—is part of it.

Maybe a rooted home isn’t something we arrive at.

Maybe it’s something we practice.

One small choice at a time.

Beginning Again

Some days won’t go the way we planned.

The kitchen will stay messy longer than we’d like.

The rhythms will fall apart.

The day will feel more reactive than intentional.

And still, we can begin again.

We can come back to the table.

We can open a book. We can reset a room.

We can choose one small thing that brings us back to center.

That is how a rooted home is built.

Not all at once. Not in perfect order. But in the quiet, decision to return.

Again and again.

If this resonates with you—if you’re trying to build a home that feels more steady, more connected, and more rooted—I’d love for you to join us.

Coming Soon! Inside our free community, you’ll find exclusive downloads, a prayer board where we can lift one another up, and a group of us walking this out right alongside you. Keep an eye out for the email once it goes live.

And just remember, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
